A Chinese group has used radioactive tracers in conjunction with MRI to visualise channels originating from acupoints on human meridians. The scientists imaged six regional migration channels originating from six acupoints on the six yin meridians of hand and foot, by injecting a minimal amount of tracer directly into the acupoints. No specific channels were visualised following injection of tracer into non-acupoints. Magnetic resonance Ingiography confirmed that the specific channels revealed were not superficial veins. Subsequent acupuncture needling studies revealed that migration of tracer along each of the specific channels could not be interrupted by acupuncture needling, a response which was different from that of either lymphatic or blood vessels. The authors conclude that their work supports the existence of meridian-like channels in humans.
